A collector’s working method

Identify the type first

Record denomination, series, watermark, reverse motif, size, language panel, security thread, and whether the ₹ symbol is present before narrowing a note by signature or year.

Then catalogue the variant

Governor or Finance Secretary, prefix, inset letter, serial-number style, printing year, plate differences, and replacement-note marks can distinguish separate checklist entries.

Historical inclusion does not imply legal-tender status. All ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes of the earlier Mahatma Gandhi Series ceased to be legal tender from midnight on 8 November 2016. RBI began withdrawing ₹2,000 notes from circulation in 2023, but the denomination continues to be legal tender.
